Below is a list of the Suffolk County Libraries that will be participating in the first annual Great Playdate! Check back soon for details on the programs each library will be hosting, along with registration details.
Some libraries require registration for listed programs and limit attendance to library patrons only. Please read the descriptions thoroughly.

Amityville Public Library

Babylon Public Library

There will be a variety of opportunities for kids/families to play from 1-4 pm. Families will get a playday passport that will get stamped for every activity they take part in. Activities include:

The Great Playdate is an early learning initiative created by the Public Libraries of Suffolk County and the Suffolk Cooperative Library System. Join the fun by participating in an imaginative day of play at Camp BFL! Did you know that when your child engages in pretend (dramatic) play, they learn about social roles and build important developmental skills? Expect to fish, make s’mores, read in your tent, go on a bear hunt and get warmed by the (play) fire. Please register.

The Great Playdate

Come talk, sing, read, and of course play at the library. You will get to meet other children and families, play with toys, and create a simple art project.  Dara Linthwaite will perform for you from 10:30 – 11:00 am and at 11:30 am – 12:00 pm, singing songs about playtime, school, apples, and autumn. Cutchogue-New Suffolk Free Library

The Cutchogue New Suffolk Free Library will be participating in the Great Play Date on Sat., September 22, 2018. We will have preschool stations including crafts, dramatic play, science, play dough and table manipulative toys from 10:00 – 1:00. At 2:00 we will have Lyrical Children for Music & Movement. Children ages 2-5 and their parents or caregivers are welcome to attend. No registration required!

Deer Park Public Library

Throughout the month of October, the Islip Library is accepting donations of pet food and treats, pet toys, collars, and dog or cat beds (new please) for the benefit of the Islip Animal Shelter. The donation box will be located in the Islip Library’s lobby.

We encourage all parents of preschool children to join this exciting new reading incentive! Once you sign up you will receive the first of ten different tracking bookmarks and a book bag. When you return a completed bookmark to the library, we will reward you with a gift and offer you the next bookmark to help you to continue tracking your books. NSPL Library card holders are invited to register when they visit the library!

The Great Playdate – Drag Queen Story Hour

Drag Queen Story Hour is a program that raises awareness of gender diversity, promotes self-acceptance, and builds empathy through an enjoyable literary experience. In this 45-minute program, a drag queen trained by children’s librarians reads picture books, sings songs, and leads children in a simple craft activity. Children love the bright colors, glamorous costumes, and sparkling energy of the drag queen performers, but more importantly, DQSH teaches children to celebrate gender diversity, and curbs bullying of LGBTQ children. Feel free to come dressed in your best! Non-PJFL card-holders are welcome to register to attend 1 week prior to the date of the program, if space is still available.

County-wide, libraries are stressing the value of play in early literacy. Come and play! Giant Tic-Tac-Toe, pretend vet stations, train set, Littlest Pet Shop and more toys will be out. Drop in any time between 1 and 4 pm.

South Huntington Public Library

Friends Fall Fair and Great American Playdate

Join us for the Friends of the Library’s Fall Fair, to be held rain or shine in the library parking lot. It’s also the Great American Playdate. Children can enjoy crafts, games, a petting zoo (11 am – 1 pm) and balloon twisters (1-3 pm). Plus there’s our Wiggling on the Weekend program for ages 2-3 at 10 am and Art Teacher Amy at 2 pm for grades 1-5. While the craft fair, games, petting zoo and balloon twisters are open to all, Wiggling on the Weekend and Art Teacher Amy are for South Huntington patrons only and are sign-up in advance programs.
